The building is designed by Michael Whitley Architects with Paul Griffith and Rebekah Milliken as team leads.
The overall site previously behind the barracks security fence is 13.6 acres. The tender was secured by the architects in 2012 with Belfast City Council as client. The council did significant work to compose a community vision. The building, with an area of 48,000 sq ft., consists of two principle long forms and the atrium reception is cranked at an angle to accommodate entry.
It is a very welcoming building and indeed the entrance appears in the centre of almost the open arms of the building’s form extended as a natural invitation to the community to enter.
You will have an opportunity to walk around this functioning leisure centre with project architect Paul Griffith during the centre’s annual sports event for over 50’s held with teams from all across the city.
